To Start Reclaiming Your Energy: Noticing Where You’re Depleted

quotes 030119 8If you’re feeling low on energy right now, you may try to find a way to increase it: more sleep, keep pushing through, or maybe just a strong cup of coffee.

Before seeking a quick solution to increase your energy, the first step is to notice where your energy is already being drained.

For many women, exhaustion doesn’t come from one challenging experience; instead, it comes from many small, ongoing energy drains that go unnoticed because you are so used to feeling this way.

Increasing your energy is not about fixing it; instead, it’s about becoming aware of what is draining you.

Why Women Miss Where Their Energy is Being Drained

Women are good at adapting, adjusting, coping, and getting things done. Over time, that adaptability can make depletion feel normal. You might tell yourself:

  • “Everyone is tired.”
  • “This is just how life is right now.”
  • “I’ll rest later.”

But your body keeps a score, and sometimes the result is a chronic physical issue.

Stress awareness starts with understanding that energy isn’t only physical; it’s also emotional, mental, and relational. When one area is constantly taxed, all areas of your well-being feel it.

Common Places Energy Quietly Leaks

You may notice depletion showing up in places like:

  • Ongoing mental load with anticipating and managing everything.
  • Emotional labor, taking care of and supporting others.
  • Expectations you feel guilty saying no to
  • Relationships that are draining and all about them.
  • Having to make decisions without any rest.

None of these is significant, yet that is why they are powerful, because your energy is quietly being drained.

Noticing Without Judgment Is Key

This step isn’t about blaming yourself or anyone else. It’s about replacing the question:

“What’s wrong with me? “With: “Where am I being asked to give more than I have? “It’s replacing the automatic response that you are the cause, with the recognition that you are carrying more than you should all on your shoulders.

When you notice depletion without judgment, your nervous system responds and releases tension. You move out of self-criticism and into self-awareness, and that’s where real energy restoration begins.

Your Thoughts

Take a few quiet minutes to check in with yourself to see where you are now:   Ask yourself:

  • What parts of my day leave me feeling most drained?
  • Are there responsibilities I automatically do without checking in with myself?
  • Do I notice emotional exhaustion more than physical tiredness?
  • If my energy were a budget, where would I say it’s being overspent?

You don’t need to change anything yet, as being aware is the first step towards your well-being.

Small Awareness Practice

At the end of each day this week, ask yourself: “What gave me energy today, and what quietly took it?”  Over time, patterns will begin to emerge. And clarity helps you choose how to support your self-care.

Women’s Group Topic: Identifying Energy Drains

Women give away a lot of their energy to others.  It’s important to step back and review how you use your energy.  Here are some questions to start the conversation:

  • Where are the most significant energy drains in your life right now?
  • Which drains do you feel are unavailable, and keep questioning whether this is true?  If you must handle it, where can you get support?
  • How were you taught to respond to exhaustion: push through or listen?
  • What would it feel like to protect yourself instead of pushing through it?

Brainstorm ways to delegate some responsibilities to others or let them go.

Closing Thought

You don’t need more energy; you need to become more aware of where it’s going.

In the next post, we’ll explore how to recognize early signs of burnout, before being physically and mentally exhausted is normal.

Be well,
