The Hidden Sources of Overwhelm: What Needs Your Attention — and What Doesn’t

journaling, overwhelmOverwhelm isn’t always about the doing; many times, it’s from everything you’re holding in your mind at once: the unfinished tasks, the emotional caring, the worries you hold on to, and the expectations that follow you through the day.

By the end of the year, many women are mentally overloaded and exhausted. Managing one’s stress begins with sorting out what truly warrants one’s attention from what’s creating inner noise.

Not everything deserves your energy.

Why Overwhelm Feels So Heavy Right Now

Overwhelm increases when:

  • Too many things feel urgent at the same time.
  • Holidays that demand our perfection.
  • Being responsible for other people’s emotions.
  • Always trying to control the outcome, so life is good for everyone.
  • All requests are important, and you don’t decide what really needs your attention.

Your mind and body are overworked, and you don’t know how to prioritize; instead, you react to everything as if it matters equally. And that’s exhausting.

What Needs Your Attention—and What Doesn’t

Where you place your attention, your energy flows.”

A helpful reframe is this simple question: Is this mine to handle right now?

Needs your attention:

  • Anything that impacts your well-being or safety.
  • What needs my attention right now?
  • What supports my values and boundaries?

Does not need your attention (right now):

  • What other people react to and how they feel.
  • Worrying about future problems.
  • Trying to be perfect.
  • Tasks that can wait, be done by someone else, or not be done at all.

Not everything needs a solution today.  Some things you need to let go of.

Your Thoughts

Does overwhelm control your life?  Do you feel you have to do everything, and do it perfectly? Are you willing to take the time to sort out how overwhelm is impacting your well-being? Here are a few questions to start the inner questioning:

  • What has been taking up the most room in your mind lately?
  • Which concerns or responsibilities feel heavy currently?
  • Am I giving attention to other people’s emotions or to do list?
  • What would help me most if I stopped doing it right now?

Clarity isn’t about control; it’s about creating space for you to make choices that support your well-being.

A Simple Sorting Practice

Healthy daily practices that foster awareness and self-care support you. Try this once a day:

  1. Write down everything that feels overwhelming.
  2. Circle what truly needs action from you.
  3. Cross out what’s out of your control.
  4. Star one small thing you can address today.
  5. Let the rest wait.

Closing Thought
