Simplifying Your Life: How Fewer Commitments Create More Room for Self-Care

simplifyAt first glance, stress can come from doing too much, though that’s just half of the stress equation. What about doing too much of what no longer fits in your life?

It’s the end of the year, and your calendars fill quickly with what you believe are your obligations, what is expected of you, and commitments that once were right, but now feel heavy, and you don’t really want to do them.  Managing your stress is not trying to control and squeeze in more things to do; instead, it’s about asking yourself: What can I let go of?

Fewer commitments create more space for you to take care of yourself.

Why Too Many Commitments Drain Energy

Everything on your To-do list, whether big or small, requires your energy. Not just time, but your attention, emotional presence, and follow-through.  Over time, too many commitments can lead to:

  • Constant feeling of having to rush or feel behind on what needs to be done.
  • Having a difficult time resting without feeling guilty
  • Fatigue from supporting so many people emotionally.
  • A feeling that your life isn’t yours, that you need to be there constantly for others.

Simplifying at the source means reducing the number of demands before stress has a chance to build.

The Difference Between Obligation and Alignment

Not every commitment is wrong, nor is every commitment right for you right now.  Ask yourself:

  • Did I choose this activity because I really want to do it, or out of guilt or expectation?
  • Does this decision to do something give me energy or quietly drain it?
  • Where I am now, is it essential for me to do everything on my list?

Listening to yourself, knowing what feels right for you, is being aligned. At the same time, guilt or expectations create stress.

Managing Your Stress with Fewer Yeses

When you say yes to everything, you feel stressed immediately, and your nervous system goes into overdrive. When you simplify, your body responds with relief.  Fewer commitments allow for:

  • More room to breathe, and feel the tension released from your body.
  • More fully present with what you are doing.
  • More energy for what is important to you.
  • Less feelings of overwhelm, which causes stress in your body.

Feeling peaceful doesn’t come from managing your stress better; instead, it often comes from having less to manage.

Your Thoughts

Do you feel you have no choice but to do everything on your list?  Is meeting others’ expectations more important to you than taking care of yourself? It’s your life, and it’s important to reflect on how best to live it.

  • Which commitments are draining right now?
  • Are there expectations I no longer want but I haven’t released?
  • Where do I say yes out of habit rather than choice?
  • What would I do with the additional time and energy with fewer unnecessary commitments?

You are not failing others; you are recognizing that self-care is essential for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

A Simple Simplifying Practice

Choose one small commitment this week and ask:  “Is this still necessary?” If not, consider:

  • Pausing it
  • Delegating it
  • Or letting it go entirely

One less commitment can create surprising space to add a smile to your face.

Women’s Group Topic

Women often take on more than they should for their well-being.   This is an excellent topic at the end of a year, to reflect on what is essential, what supports you, what drains you, and how you take small steps to increase your energy.  Here are some questions to start the conversation:

  • What commitments currently drain your energy the most?
  • How do you decide when to say yes or no?
  • What fears come up when you think about letting something go?
  • How might fewer commitments change how you feel day-to-day?

Creating space in your group for each person to take the time to listen to themselves truly and hear what their body and inner voice are telling them is essential for their well-being.

Closing Thought

Simplifying isn’t about giving things up; it’s about giving back to yourself.

As we continue, we’ll explore how releasing pressure (not responsibility) helps women move toward a calmer, more balanced year-end.
